Calico Withall

Meet the artist

Calico Withall is a New York–based painter whose work explores shared human experience through expressive portraiture and narrative painting. She holds a BA in Art with a concentration in Painting from SUNY Plattsburgh and maintains an active studio practice centered on emotion, memory, identity, and human connection.

Inspired by her mother, also a painter, Withall developed an early appreciation for art as a way to process and reflect on lived experience. Her paintings combine bold, psychologically driven color with intimate figurative compositions, exploring themes of girlhood, family, relationships, isolation, and belonging.

Her ongoing series, Human, After All, examines the emotional complexity within everyday moments, transforming personal experiences into reflections on vulnerability, connection, grief, and what it means to be human. Withall continues to develop her studio practice and exhibit her work while working toward her long-term goal of teaching painting at the college level.
